MarinHEAL GRANTEES

Sausalito-Marin City School District – Phillips Campus Garden

The Marin County Cooperation Team (MCCT) began tending the garden located at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy’s Phillips Campus in Marin City in the winter of 2024. Since then, infrastructure upgrades have led to a complete renovation of the garden, transitioning the site to an all-organic food growing school farm.

The garden has flourished into a learning space for garden stewards, youth, community members, and families alike. Volunteers play an integral role in the success of the garden’s upkeep, with volunteer workdays regularly hosted twice every month. MCCT has built a large network of garden volunteers through their relationships cultivated with community members and partnerships with local community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and non-profits. In 2025, MCCT launched an afterschool program in collaboration with Bridge the Gap for youth school aged K-6th grade.

As production increases, the gardens’ capacity for distributing more food has expanded to include various locations. Produce grown in the garden is currently sold at two local grocers in Sausalito (Driver’s Market & Deli and Golden Gate Market). Fresh crops are also integrated into MCCT’s Culinary Business incubator (CBI) program, and Community Feeding days.  In the CBI program, local food entrepreneurs from Marin City expand their skill sets on topics such as nutrition, marketing, and business development. Community Feeding days hosted by MCCT occur once a month and incorporate crops from the garden into the meals distributed by a mobile food truck.

MCCT has already reached several milestones in their vision to transform the Phillips Drive campus of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy . As the garden continues to grow and more food is produced and distributed within Marin City, MCCT is further investing in the health of it’s community by increasing food access, offering educational opportunities and supporting small businesses. MCCT will be entering it’s third year in partnership with MarinHEAL, with hopes of becoming the first USDA organic farm in Marin City.

The garden has flourished into a learning space for garden stewards, youth, community members, and families alike to create sustainably within their local food system.
