MarinHEAL Grantees

Walnut Place – also recognized as West Marin Senior Housing, is an affordable residential community located in Point Reyes Station. This site serves older adults and people with disabilities, regularly providing engagement opportunities to residents. Through the MarinHEAL grant, the garden at Walnut Place underwent a complete renovation. The wooden garden beds had deteriorated from age and were impacted by gophers. Some of the beds were no longer able to be used for food growing, as they were falling apart.

In the spring of 2025, the wooden garden beds at Walnut Place were replaced with durable metal beds. During the transition, existing crops were transplanted into mobile grown bags. Residents have already began harvesting crops from the newly installed beds, and are preparing to expand the number of crops planted for the next planting season.

Point Reyes Affordable Housing (PRAH) is located just a few minutes from Walnut Place. PRAH is a 27-unit affordable housing site that serves low-income families and individuals. Through MarinHEAL, PRAH launched its first ever garden program. Mobile garden beds are now available for residents to grow their own produce, in their own residential outdoor spaces.

In partnership with San Geronimo Valley Community Center and MarinHEAL, a rotating garden coordinator supported the renovation of the Walnut Place Garden, and development of the garden beds at Point Reyes Affordable Housing. Gardening lessons were provided for residents and caregivers, supporting the establishment of both garden spaces. EAH allows residents independence to grow the crops of their choice with guidance and support from EAH staff and a garden coordinator.

As the cost of food continues to rise, these garden spaces allow residents to lessen the financial impact of groceries, by providing a space to grow their own produce. The EAH Resident Coordinator provides continued support for residents as they develop their food growing skills. The gardens at Walnut Place and Point Reyes Affordable housing have provided the means for residents to share food with one another.
